The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Drop Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to the Game

The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it brings with it the first new weapon added to the title since the mace made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it might just revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and updates focused on animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we desired a fresh armament that would increase combat distance, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," noted a senior product manager. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we ran our trials and also made sense for the use case."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your friends on steeds, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action ideally crafted for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a primary use cases for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and deal more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for knightly combat."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The wild enjoyment doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for equipping the elytra and flying forth and making some real mayhem," she hints.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport immediately.

Another key feature in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it transport you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your oxygen levels, so there's no need to come up for air for a breath.

The remaining new features are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus popping up in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've long considered this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for underwater," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus concept art looked compelling, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also adds that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you end up in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford rivers and lakes while mounted on a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the best defense it deserves.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a solid offering. The spear on its own — and the pandemonium it invites — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
