Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
