EU Naval Forces Free Crew Following Somali Pirate Attack on Vessel
EU maritime units have successfully rescued 24 sailors from a Malta-registered petroleum vessel that was targeted by pirates off the coast of Somali waters.
The vessel, which was carrying fuel from Indian ports to South Africa, was taken over on the recent incident when armed pirates opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before taking control of the vessel.
All sailors locked themselves inside a fortified citadel while the pirates took control of the ship.
Mission Accomplished
A naval vessel, operating under the EU's anti-piracy mission, arrived at the tanker on the following day. Special forces entered the vessel and discovered all 24 crew members safe and sound.
"All personnel is safe and no harm have been reported. Throughout the ordeal, they stayed in the citadel in constant communication with command center," authorities stated, noting that a "demonstration of power" had convinced the pirates to leave the vessel before the warship reached the location.
Ongoing Threat
Officials emphasized that the danger level in the area "continues to be serious" as the armed groups are continue to be in the area.
The rescue operation utilized a helicopter, drone and surveillance aircraft. Just hours earlier, another ship in the same area was targeted by a small speedboat but successfully avoided it.
Resurgence of Piracy
This incident marks the latest in a series of incidents that have raised alarms about a renewal of piracy in the area.
Piracy operations had decreased when international naval patrols and security measures were introduced after peaking more than a decade ago.
However, attacks by militant groups on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been conducted for the past two years, have led ships to be rerouted through the African coastline - creating new opportunities for Somali gangs.
Statistical Overview
- Seven reported incidents of piracy took place off the coast of Somalia last year
- Three hijackings were recorded among these events
- A single case of piracy was reported in 2023
Maritime security experts are closely watching the developments as vessel operators navigate these increasingly dangerous waters.
