Discarded Deep-Sea Nets from France Evolve into Vital Defense Against Enemy Drones in Ukraine
On the coastal quaysides of French fishing ports, accumulations of old nets stand as a regular occurrence.
The usable duration of marine harvesting nets generally extends between 12 and 24 months, post-usage they become worn and beyond repair.
Presently, this specialized fishing material, originally designed for harvesting ocean species from the sea bed, is finding new application for another type of catch: hostile aerial vehicles.
Charitable Effort Converts Discarded Gear
A coastal assistance group has transported two shipments of nets extending 280 kilometers to Ukraine to defend troops and residents along the frontline where hostilities peak.
Russian forces use inexpensive unmanned aircraft equipped with explosives, directing them by remote control for distances of up to 15.5 miles.
"Since the conflict began, the war has transformed. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a drone war," stated a humanitarian organizer.
Tactical Use of Fishing Nets
Defense units use the nets to construct tunnels where unmanned aircraft rotors become entangled. This method has been described as web-building predators trapping prey in a mesh.
"The Ukrainians have told us they don't need any old nets. Previous donations included multiple that are unusable," the representative added.
"The materials we provide are made of specialized material and used for ocean trawling to catch strong marine species which are quite powerful and hit the nets with a force equivalent to that of a drone."
Growing Implementations
At first employed by healthcare workers defending field hospitals near the combat zone, the nets are now employed on thoroughfares, overpasses, the entrances to hospitals.
"It's incredible that this elementary solution proves so effective," remarked the charity president.
"We face no lack of fishing nets in this region. It presents a challenge to know where to send them as various companies that recycle them have shut down."
Operational Difficulties
The humanitarian group was formed after expatriate citizens approached the founders requesting help regarding basic necessities and treatment resources for Ukraine.
Twenty volunteers have transported two lorry consignments of humanitarian assistance 1,430 miles to the Polish-Ukrainian frontier.
"After being informed that Ukraine sought protective gear, the fishing community reacted rapidly," commented the charity director.
Aerial Combat Development
Russia is using FPV unmanned aircraft resembling those on the consumer sector that can be guided by wireless command and are then packed with detonation devices.
Hostile controllers with live camera streams steer them to their targets. In certain regions, military personnel report that all activity ceases without drawing the notice of clusters of "lethal" suicide aircraft.
Defensive Methods
The trawling material are extended across supports to create mesh corridors or used to cover fortifications and vehicles.
Friendly aerial vehicles are also outfitted with sections of mesh to release onto hostile aircraft.
By July this year, Ukraine was dealing with more than five hundred unmanned aircraft daily.
Global Aid
Multiple tons of old nets have also been contributed by fishers in Nordic countries.
A former fisheries committee president declared that regional fishermen are more than happy to help the war effort.
"They experience satisfaction to know their discarded equipment is going to help save lives," he informed media.
Funding Constraints
The association has exhausted the monetary means to send more supplies this year and negotiations are occurring for Ukraine to provide transport to pick up the nets.
"We shall assist obtain the gear and prepare them but we don't have the monetary resources to continue organizing transport ourselves," explained the organization representative.
Real-World Restrictions
An armed services communicator explained that protective mesh corridors were being installed across the Donetsk region, about the majority of which is now described as held and governed by opposition military.
She explained that hostile aircraft operators were increasingly finding ways to penetrate the mesh.
"Mesh does not represent a panacea. They are just a particular aspect of safeguarding from drones," she stressed.
An ex-agricultural business owner expressed that the people he interacted with were affected by the assistance from French fishing towns.
"The circumstance that those in the coastal economy the far region of Europe are dispatching gear to support their defensive measures has brought a few tears to their eyes," he concluded.
